Workshop: Pit-Firing

Pit firing is an ancient firing method in which ceramic pieces are fired in an open flame, in direct contact with combustible materials, salts, minerals and organic matter. Their interaction with fire leaves colours and markings on the clay.

The workshop includes two sessions:

~ Preparation session — 28.10, 21:00–22:00: We will meet at the studio and apply terra sigillata to the pieces — a slip that enhances the effects of the firing.

~ Firing day — 7.11, 10:00–17:00: We will meet in a location up to 40 minutes from Tel Aviv. The exact location will be sent to participants. We will learn how to prepare the pit and manage the firing, and work with different materials to create colours on the surface of the clay. After a shared lunch, we will open the pit and examine the results.

Each participant may bring up to three pieces, no larger than 20 cm each, made from gorged clay  SM 0.5. The pieces must be ready and dry by 27.10, before the TS session. Aim for even walls and avoid thin or delicate parts that may be damaged during firing. Make decorative pieces such as vessels and sculptural objects. Pieces fired in a pit are not suitable for food or drink and do not hold water.

On the firing day bring with you: three bisque-fired pieces, water, something nice for our shared lunch, and closed shoes. You are welcome to bring dry coffee grounds from home, dried banana peels and citrus peels, as well as leaves and flowers (Rosemary and any plant you would like to try).

Price: 350₪ for both sessions, including terra sigillata, bisque firing, firing materials and instruction.

Studio Demeter students: 300₪ when registering through the app.

In case of rain, the firing day will be postponed to another Saturday in November.
